April 11, 2008 HIS 240 with Dr 13 Perkins The Autobiography of Malcolm X By the time General Robert E . Lee surrendered his army at the courthouse in Appomattox, 618,000 American soldiers had died and approximately four million former slaves had to find their place in society . Following the American Civil War the nation had to unify . Unfortunately, with the imposition of Black Codes and the Jim Crow Laws, the nation unified through discrimination against African Americans . The integration of African – Americans into society was slow and painful . The “separate, but equal” initiative of the Jim Crow Laws led to heightened aggression against blacks with an increase in lynching and the revival of the Klu Klux Klan . It was not until black political leaders like Booker T . Washington, W.E.B. Dubois, and Marcus Garvey inspired and promoted change . The Harlem Renaissance during the Roaring Twenties inspired many balck because of the creation and celebration of black culture. Malcolm X was effected greatly by these influences on black culture. However, Malcolm X himself would later redefine what it means to be black. His autobiography outlines his own development as a black man, but also sheds light on the common experiences of African-Americans in the United States during their continuous effort for equality. The Autobiography of Malcolm X is a riveting example of the African – American experience that fully demonstrates the struggle for equality . 1
