Krystal Balleza THEA 2040 sec 2 Professor Tamarkin March 20, 2016 Ibsenism “Watch out, for today, a new epoch of German literature begins”- Julius Hoffory. The societal and revolutionary importance of Henrik Ibsen is shown through Ghosts . Ibsen’s Ghosts is not just about constant misfortune for the characters involved, it is a cautioning for the world at large. The play was one of Ibsen’s most scandalous works, defined by one critic as “an open sewer.” It was controversial for it enforced audiences to recognize and tackle issues they would prefer to overlook. While researching on the play, the article “Ghosts, A Play for All Theatre Concepts?” is what ultimately made me decide that this play needs to be on the syllabus or at least considered beside A Doll’s House . The article consisted of theatre historians having written thorough interpretations and reviews of the ongoing subversion of Ibsen's plays into the London and Paris stage, and pointing out that less consideration was being made to the expansive cultural movement of "Ibsenism, the world of Ibsen performances and texts as they interacted with ongoing cultural change; offering a case study of how theatre and drama acted as a circulatory system for the surge of western modernism and modernity that appeared in late-nineteenth- century western metropolis” (Kelly).
