Unformatted text preview: -Oncological Emergencies
- Many cancers have become chronic diseases. Acute
complications from cancer/ treatments can occur at any time. . Sepsis- Organisms enter the bloodstream through any site
of skin breakdown and cause severe infection. Can result
in septic shock. - Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation (BIC)-
Problem with blood—clotting process -Antidiuretic Hormone Syndrome (SIADH)— Disorder of
impaired Water retention - Spinal Cord Compression (SCC)- Occurs when a tumor
directly enters the spinal cord. Most frequent area is the
thoracic spine. Can result in permanent neurological
damage. - Hypercalcemia- Bone metastasis can simulate bone
breakdown and bone resorption, which releases more
calcium from bone and leads to hypercalcemia. (STAY
HYDRATED) - Superior Vena Cava Syndrome (SVC)— Compression or
obstruction by tumor growth or by clots in the SVC leads
to congestion of blood returning to the body. (The SVC
returns all blood from the head, neck, and upper
extremities to the heart). Painful and can be life-
threatening. 0 Symptoms are edema of the face, arms, and hands 0 Engorged blood vessels 0 Erythema of the upper body 0 Dyspnea o Stridor 0 Late Symptoms- Hemorrhage/Cyanosis/Cognitive
Changes/Decreased Cardiac Output/Hypotension - Tumor Lysis Syndrome (TLS)— Large numbers of tumor
cells are destroyed rapidly. By—products of damaged
cancer cells are released into the bloodstream faster than
the body can eliminate them. Severe or untreated TLS can
cause acute kidney injury (AKI) and death. 0 Potassium levels increase causing hyperkalemia 0 Cardiac Dysfunction o Hyperuricemia (increased uric acid in the
bloodstream) o Hyperphosphatemia - Hospice care
0 Purpose
- Hospice care, also referred to as end~of~life care, provides
care to patients who are facing an incurable disease in
which treatment is no longer an option for possible cure.
