iiABSTRACTSmall and medium enterprises (SMEs) play an important role in the Sri Lankan environmentand contribute significantly to economic growth and social development through jobcreation, poverty alleviation and new business development, but on the other hand there aremany failures of SMEs. Poor record keeping practices, incorrect accounting information,incorrect financial performance and poor financial decision making. Therefore, many SMEsdie soon after their establishment and face financial and management challenges. The studysought to examine the impact of the Accounting Records Keeping Practices on FinancialPerformance of SMEs in Vavuniya District. Bookkeeping Practices (BKP), FinancialReporting Practices (FRP), Budgeting Practices (BP) and Asset Depreciation Practices(ADP) used as independent variables to measure the accounting record keeping practices.Financial performance (FP) was used as the dependent variable of this study. This researchis based on quantitative research method and data were collected from 118 SMEs inVavuniya district using structured. Descriptive analysis, correlation analysis and multipleregression analysis are used to analyze the collected data according to SPSS 26 version. Theresults reveal that accounting record keeping practices have a positive effect on the financialperformance of SMEs and Financial Reporting practices have a significant effect on thefinancial performance of SMEs. Therefore, SMEs should be more concerned about recordkeeping procedures as a tool to improve and increase financial performance and relevantauthorities should develop specific guidelines and provide templates of accountingprocedures to make accounting procedures easier and more familiar to SMEsKeywords:Accounting Recordkeeping, Financial Performance and Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs).
