Sexuality Societal Attitudes toward Sexuality Restrictive societies: Transition into adult sexual behavior is discontinuous, with adolescent sexual behavior  discouraged. Semi-restrictive societies: Adolescent sexual behavior is tolerated, but not well-accepted.  There are social  sanctions for sexual behavior and formal prohibitions. Permissive societies: Transition of young people into adult sexual activity is continuous and begins in  childhood. Changing Attitudes toward Sexuality in European American Cultures In the 1960s and 1970s, attitudes toward sexuality were permissive. But… cultural attitudes toward promiscuity remain negative. Monogamy is still highly valued. Attitudes towards sexuality have also become more gender-neutral over time. In the 1980s and 1990s, sexual attitudes have become somewhat more conservative.
