Alexandra Williams Brown Philosophy 215 October 18, 2006 Exam Essay Indian philosophy relies on many abstract concepts and beliefs in order to achieve its goals, thus, any student must study quite in-depth to make sense of it. From what we have read and discussed in class, I feel that I understand the philosophy itself; however, I cannot apply it to my day-to-day life. The goal of Indian philosophy, attaining liberation by overcoming ignorance, requires complete dedication and much more knowledge than any class could ever cover. In the Katha Upanishad , Indian philosophy is explained through an allegory of a young man’s father sacrificing him to the god of with his father and the second to learn how to correctly perform a fire ritual. death, Yama. The young man is offered three boons, the first of which he uses to restore his relationship. The final boon is to understand Death.
