5ABSTRACT The study was conducted to determine the relationship between students who excel in the field of Mathematics and their performance on other subjects unrelated to the subject of Mathematics. The research design used in this study was descriptive in order to provide clearer details and added insights from proponents, therefore gaining a more in-depth view of the research. A total of 10 learners were chosen to participate in this study. These participants were Grade 11 STEM learners of the Ateneo de Davao University–Senior High School. The research involved participants–of any gender– that fit the given qualifications. These qualifications were the following: each participant must be a Grade 11 STEM learner of the Ateneo de Davao–Senior High School, each learner must have a consistent grade of 90 in all Math Subjects from Junior High School
to Senior High School, and each learner must be a consistent honor student from Junior High School to Senior High School. The sampling method used in this study was the purposive sampling technique, more specifically, the snowball technique. This technique method was utilized for this research set very specific qualifications for its participants, therefore the researchers had to carefully review a possible participant’s grades and experiences and then decided accordingly. Additionally, snowball sampling technique was used because the study set qualifications that were challenging to find. The researchers chose to conduct in-depth interviews as a data collection method, with the aid of an interview guide. This method helped the researchers in evaluating the qualifications of the respondents. The data analysis method used in this study was Thematic Analysis. With this method, the researchers were able to detect and identify factors or variables that influenced any issue generated by the participants. The findings of the study led the researchers to these conclusions: (1) When learners excel in a subject, they are motivated to perform better and more competently since they have a deep understanding ofthat subject. Confidence towards a subject also affects a learner’s overall performance in both Mathematics and non-Mathematics subjects. (2) There is no correlation between a mathematically-inclined learner’s skills in Math and his/her understanding with subjects that are non-Mathematics related. (3) Learners are able to address academic difficulties through different coping mechanisms. These include working and studying hard, staying positive, seeking help, and listening in class. These were the recommendations offered: (1) Future researchers should conduct this study given that there is a long period of time allotted for its completion. (2) The researchers would also suggest creating a timetable for the whole duration of the research. (3) Scrutinizing related literature from previous studies should be done over the course of the research especially if the subject is narrowed down into specific constituents. (4) Finally, the researchers would recommend this study as a reference for future researchers who would like to create a similar study.
