Dr. Emmert Poultry Production and Management 18 January 2007 Problem Set I 1. The first section of a typically vertically-integrated poultry company is core business, which is responsible for seeing the birds from production to processing. This step includes sales, processing plants, market broilers, hatcheries, breeder flocks, and PBC’s. The second step, known as by product/services, supports the core business and is comprised of feed mills, and rendering plants. The last segment, or distribution channels are made up of restaurants, retail, clubs/wholesale, institutions, and the export market. 2. Primary breeder companies produce parent birds and conduct genetic research. 3. PBC’s produce parent birds and sell them to the integrator. 4. Turkey hatching eggs are more valuable than broiler hatching eggs because turkeys lay fewer eggs and the eggs have a lower hatchability. In addition, turkeys take longer to reach maturity and more labor goes into turkey fertility through the use of A.I.
