Allison 1 Erin Allison Professor Caldwell English 1102 10 April 2014 “Mother To Son” By Langston Hughes The poem, “Mother To Son” is a life lesson from the mother to her son about the importance of never giving up even if it seems bad at times. Langston Hughes seems to display the American dream and the reality of life for African Americans. The speaker of this story is the mother. The mother has light tone throughout the poem, but uses metaphors to show her challenges in her life. The mother begins the poem with a statement “I’ll tell you:”(Hughes) which shows she is going tell something of importance. Then she goes on to provide information of her living situations by using the word “Bare” (Hughes) saying she lived in places that weren’t easy living conditions. Finally, she tells her son don’t give up and don’t stop trying because she is still going and she has had it very rough. The mother feels compelled to discuss this topic with
