POLS 203 FALL 2007 PRACTICE PROBLEMS 3 Please note that in the exam you will be asked to show all the steps in answering the question and at the end, interpret the results in a couple of sentences. 1. A sample of students attending a large university has been selected. Is there a statistically significant difference between Political Science majors and other students on average number of books (other than those required by course work) read per year? Use the five step model to test this hypothesis (α=.05 level). Political Science Other 1 X = 16.2 2 X = 13.7 s 1 = 2.3 s 2 = 9.0 N 1 = 236 N 2 = 321 Z test for independent groups. Since populations variances are not reported to be equal, we  will use  model B . Standard error:  .53 Z   = 4.72 Critical z”s:  +1.96, -1.96 Reject the null hypothesis. 2. A random sample of married women is selected and these women are classified as being either “satisfied” or “unsatisfied” in their marriage. The two groups of women are then compared in terms of the duration of their marriages with the following results: Group 1 (satisfied): n=35, average duration of marriage (expressed in terms of nearest whole year): 25, standard deviation: 6 Group 2 (unsatisfied): n=27, average duration of marriage (expressed in terms of nearest whole year): 20, standard deviation: 5 Assuming that the variations of the respective population distributions for these two groups are equal , can the researcher conclude that duration of marriage is linked to satisfaction in the relationship? Test this hypothesis at α=.01 level. t test for independent groups. Since populations variances are reported to be equal, we will
