April 24, 2008 Human Geography Human Impact on the Natural Environment Which in turn has an impact on HUMANS Meteorology o Study of short-term weather/atmosphere o Parent discipline is physics o Troposphere and stratosphere Climatology o Study of long term weather patterns/atmospheric patterns o Climatology is a sub-field/sub-discipline of geography o Climatologists are geographers and meteorologists The Natural Greenhouse Effect o Creates habitable temperatures Greenhouse Gases (GHGs) o Water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, fluorocarbons Human Enhanced Greenhouse Effect o Anthropogenic increase in GHGs There are three main factors that directly influence the energy balance of the Earth o 1) total energy influx – depends on Earth’s distance from the sun and on solar activity (ex. sunbursts)
