What about compounds which contain more than 2 elements? Compounds that contain more than 2 elements usually involve a polyatomic ion bonded to either another polyatomic ion or simply an ion. In these compounds both ionic and covalent bonding occur. The polyatomic ion is bonded covalently together. However, the polyatomic forms an ionic bond with the other polyatomic ion or plain ion.
