COMM 261 – Week 4 Cahan – Can’t Get Their Minds Ashore I really liked this piece because I thought that Cahan gave a great voice to the immigrants –  even though they were from all over the world, each had a distinct voice that Cahan  successfully kept intact.  When a writer is able to form the sounds of the voices in my head, I  think that they have shown the true character of the people involved.  I liked, too, how he kept a  few words from each of their languages, “signore,” “Herr,” “kosher,” because it juxtaposed each  of the characters, and made us realize that their attempt to get into America does not take away  from the culture that they already have. Cahan – Pillelu, Pillelu! Cahan did a great job of setting the scene for this piece – the imagery and the setting really  added to the story.  His use of color and bright adjectives made the piece come alive for me,  and I really felt like I was there.  I especially liked, at the very beginning, the market people’s  voices yelling about what they had: “Carrots in honor of the holiday!”  It made the scene more  believable and the commotion of the town came alive. Markey – Drift I thought that Markey’s repetition of the dead man’s number 48,227 was interesting – it certainly  got across the idea that this person really was just another number.  Yes, from what the  Sergeant says, it seems like there are a lot of people dying, but you feel some sympathy and  sadness for this lost person, this person who had a life but is dead and being buried with just a
