In 1993, an Amtrak train traveling from Mobile, Alabama derailed causing a massive accident in where 47 lives were lost and many more were injured. The blame for the accident does not just fall on one person or entity. There were many people responsible for this accident across a few organizations. The series of events and the decisions that were made by these entities is what caused the derailment. There are many stakeholder in this incident which includes the passengers, Amtrak, CSX, WGN and the captain of that boat, the emergency response team and the United States Coast Guard. The passengers on the Amtrak stood to lose their lives because of the derailment. These were perhaps the most important stakeholders as these people suffered the physical aspects of the accident and their families (not a party to the accident) suffered the emotional consequences of the accident. These people are the victims and it is to them that everyone is responsible to. Since Amtrak is the owner of the train that was involved in the accident, Amtrak would be the next important stakeholder. Amtrak carries the responsibility of keeping its passengers safe. Due to repairs, this particular train was running late and was going over the allowed 70 mph speed limit, at 72 mph. The foggy conditions played a huge part in visibility and the conductor shouldn’t have increased the speed. Although Amtrak did give the go ahead to travel at normal speed, the conductor should have taken into the consideration the less than ideal traveling conditions and kept the speed of the train lower instead of higher. CSX, the company that owns and maintains the railway on which the accident occurred, would be another stakeholder in this case. CSX, like Amtrak, is responsible for maintaining the safe travel of their railways. Even-though, this exact situation was not foreseeable, by allowing the train to be travel on their tracks at normal speeds they endangered the lives of all on board.
