The Red Hunt 2 March 2006 Loyalty Review Board  (1950) Truman’s loyalty program out of hand Every mail carrier questioned about loyalty Thousands of governmental employees fired arbitrarily without being told identity of  accuser or charges against them The Smith Act  (1940) Makes conspiracy of violent overthrow of US government illegal  Aimed at Nazis 1945 – Brought back Nazi party issues and passed out propaganda October 1949 – Truman convicted 11 top leaders of American Communist Party Tried for their  opinions , not their actual behavior “Political Showtrial” – similar to Stalin’s in Moscow Not good enough for witch hunters The Attorney General’s List Senator Carl Mund (R from ND) and Nixon sponsored bill  Required all members of Communist Party to register with the Justice Department Also stipulated that any member would be fired Constitutional? 5 th  Amendment – no incrimination You cannot be fired without knowing the reasons ( Habeas Corpus ) Other Senators added ridiculous amendments Senator Pat McCarran (D) offered so many amendments that the bill was  renamed for him September 1950 – before congressional election Truman vetoed Repassed by huge majorities, liberals included McCarran Internal Security Act (1950) became Law “Little McCarran Acts” passed at state and local levels Corporations, school districts, entertainment, etc.  Teachers had to swear in that they were not members of the Communist party Supreme Court upheld these crazy acts Beginning of Eisenhower period, many supreme court justices died or retired and it was  gutted
