All the Way with LBJ 18 April 2006 Reading: Ambrose and Brinkley, 190-223 Goodwin, LBJ and the American Dream , foreward, 1-101 Vietnam, 1964 – The year Johnson wanted to lay low; running for election, wanted highest  possible vote total, and was doing everything he could to not suggest an increase in war.  Tonkin  Resolution.  While all this was going on, the situation within S. Vietnam continued to deteriorate.  There was one coup after the next – governments couldn’t stay in office for more than a month or  so.  There was rioting in the streets of Saigon, some directed at the US.  The argon was taking a  beating in the jungles.  Clearly another crisis point was approaching.
