Unformatted text preview: Sieve Analysis of Fine and Coarse Aggregate ASTM C 136 Tim Boyer CM 442 Pre-Lab Purpose The purpose is to provide a standard method of determining the particle size distribution of various aggregate products. This would provide useful data for control of the production of various aggregates. Equipment Balances for fine aggregate, accurate to 0.1g; for coarse aggregate, accurate to 0.5g Sieves sieve cloth mounted on substantial frames in a way to prevent loss of material Mechanical Sieve shaker Oven capable of maintaining 110C Procedure Dry sample Select appropriate sieves based on materials being studied (coarser at top) Use a limited quantity of sample based on sieve Insert an intermediate sieve to alleviate an overloaded sieve Split sample and sieve separately Sieving: One end slightly inclined Strike the side of the sieve sharply upward about 150 times per minute Turn the sieve about 1/6 of a revolution at intervals of about 25 strokes The following sizes will be used: 1 in., 1in., in., in., 3/8in., #4, #8, #16, #30, #50, #100, #200The following sizes will be used: 1 in....
