Sieve Analysis of Fine and Coarse Aggregate ASTM C 136 Tim Boyer CM 442 Pre-Lab Purpose The purpose is to provide a standard method of determining the particle size distribution of various aggregate products. This would provide useful data for control of the production of various aggregates. Equipment Balances – for fine aggregate, accurate to 0.1g; for coarse aggregate, accurate to 0.5g Sieves – sieve cloth mounted on substantial frames in a way to prevent loss of material Mechanical Sieve shaker Oven – capable of maintaining 110C Procedure Dry sample Select appropriate sieves based on materials being studied (coarser at top) Use a limited quantity of sample based on sieve Insert an intermediate sieve to alleviate an overloaded sieve Split sample and sieve separately Sieving: One end slightly inclined Strike the side of the sieve sharply upward about 150 times per minute Turn the sieve about 1/6 of a revolution at intervals of about 25 strokes The following sizes will be used: 1 ½in., 1in., ¾in., ½in., 3/8in., #4, #8, #16, #30, #50, #100, #200
