Making and Curing Concrete Test Specimens ASTM C-192 Tim Boyer CM 442 Pre-Lab Purpose The purpose of this lab is to provide a standardized method for preparation of materials, mixing concrete, and making and curing concrete test specimens under laboratory conditions Equipment Molds – steel, cast iron, or other nonabsorbent material; non-malleable; watertight Cylinder Molds Horizontal Molds for Creep Test Cylinders Beam and Prism Molds Tamping Rods – Large rod, about 24in long; small rod, about 12in long Mallets – about 1.25lb Vibrators – internal; frequency of at least 7000 vibrations per minute; at least 0.75in in diameter and smaller than 1.5in; 3in longer than max depth Small Tools – shovels; pails; trowels; wood float; blunted trowels; straightedge; feeler gage; scoops; rulers; rubber gloves; metal mixing bowls Slump apparatus Sampling and Mixing Pan – flat-bottom; heavy gage; watertight Wet-sieving equipment Air content apparatus Scales – accurate within 0.3% of test load

Unformatted text preview: Thermometer Concrete mixer power driven revolving drum; tilting Procedure Mix concrete in a suitable mixer or by hand; allow for 10% excess Before starting rotation, add coarse aggregate, some mixing water and solution of admixture Start mixer; add fine aggregate, cement, and water; mix for 3min, pause for 3min, mix again for 2min Deposit machine-mixed concrete in a clean, damp mixing pan; remix by shovel until uniform Select portions of batch to be used in tests; cover concrete when not being mixed or sampled Measure slump; measure air content; measure yield; measure temperature Mold specimens near to location of storage Place concrete into molds using scoop, blunted towel or shovel Consolidate specimens according to slump size Post-Lab Test Conditions Test Conditions were normal for this procedure. Results Samples were placed in molds and allowed to cure. Comments The procedure was followed as written and everything proceeded normally....
