Handy, 1914 recorded by Bessie Smith and Louis Armstrong, 1925 The Blues: a Foundational American Music Originated in the late 19 th century with African-American musicians in Mississippi River Delta of the Deep South Influenced by older black styles like work songs and spiritual songs (connections to lyrical themes) Developed in early 20 th -c. Alongside jazz; intertwined with jazz in many ways. Musical style includes several distinctive elements , including blue notes o Pitch Pitch is one of the basic dimensions of musical sound Pitch refers to the highness or lowness of a specific sound Some musicians use letters of the alphabet (A,B,C…..) to denote pitch A song doesn’t use all available pitches, just some. In the blues and related styles, musicians end or “flatten” certain pitches. These are called blue notes Blues also features the technique of call and response.
