Harris in 1892 This type of music want really messed with by black people Most people around the world don't read music and never learned how Most people never learned how to read music because they couldn't afford to buy sheet music “After the ball” was published in 1892 Sheet music: songs in musical notation Used to be in retail stores to amateur musicians (mostly white middle class) Songs were promoted by professional singers Required large public capable of reading music Who gets paid and how much? o Depends on legal agreement between composer, publisher, etc. Most writers requested royalties which means that they get paid every time the piece sales instead of a flat fee from the publishers Vaudeville: network of cities where preform ears preform like an artist going on tour. The shows was anything that could entertain the audience; like magic, comedians, acrobats, musicians, dancers, etc.
