Specific Gravity for Coarse Aggregate ASTM C-127 Tim Boyer CM 442 Post-Lab Purpose The purpose of this lab is to provide a standardized method for measuring the bulk specific gravity, a characteristic commonly considered when making mixtures. Equipment Balance – a weighing device capable of accuracy of 0.5g or 0.05% of sample weight Sample Container – wire basket of 3.35mm (No. 6) Water Tank – a watertight tank into which the sample may be placed while suspended below the balance Sieves – No. 4 (4.75mm) or other sizes as needed Procedure Immerse 1-1/2in nominal aggregate in water for 24 hours. Remove from water and roll sample into absorbent cloth until all visible water is removed Weigh test sample in saturated surface-dry condition Replace back in water and determined weight of sample in water Dry sample to constant weight

Results Bin 2 SSD Weight = B= 2076.00 g Weight in Water = C= 1287.90 g Bulk Specific Gravity (SSD) = 2.63 Bin 3 Dry Weight = A= 1997.60 g SSD Weight = B= 2076.00 g Weight in Water = C= 1265.10 g Bulk Specific Gravity = 2.46 Bulk Specific Gravity (SSD) = 2.56 Apparent Specific Gravity = 2.73 Absorption = 3.92 % Comments The procedure was followed properly for coarse aggregate from bins 2 and 3. However, after the two aggregates were placed in the oven, the pan containing the aggregate from bin 2 was misplaced and there was not enough time to repeat the process. Therefore a dry weight could not be taken and only one calculation could be done on the information from bin 2....
