Unit Weight of an Aggregate ASTM C 29 Tim Boyer CM 442 Pre-Lab Purpose The purpose is to provide a standard method of determining a unit weight or density of an aggregate and using that measurement of voids in different aggregates to help in determination of which aggregate to use in a given situation. Equipment Balance – accurate within 0.1% of the test load Tamping Rod – round, straight rod, 3/8in. in diameter, approx. 24in. in length, rounded ends Cylindrical metal measure – watertight, 80%-150% diameter relative to the height, smooth interior Shovel or Scoop Calibration Equipment – plate glass, ¼ in. thick, 1 in. greater that measure diameter Procedure Reduce the sample size according to C 702 down to about 125-200% needed to fill the measure. Dry the aggregate, preferably in oven at 230F. Calibrate the measure if necessary to find the volume. Rodding Procedure Fill the measure about 1/3 full. Use the tamping rod and rod the later with about 25 strokes evenly over surface Fill another 2/3 and repeat rodding Add more so that there is overflowing and repeat rodding
