Legislature Tackles Underage Drinking By: Senator Joel Lourie It is nearly impossible to miss the tragic stories in the press that enlighten us with the facts that too many teenagers are experimenting with alcohol, becoming binge drinkers, and in some cases even dying. Information compiled by the Pacific Institute for Research and Evaluation indicates cause for alarm. Of those teenagers in grades 9-12 surveyed, close to 3 out of 4 have experimented with some form of alcohol, 43% had consumed at least one drink in the last 30 days, and 24% had consumed 5 or more drinks in the last month. This year, the Legislature took the issue head on. When the General Assembly adjourned in June, we had passed a comprehensive bill that significantly strengthened our laws related to underage drinkers along with the imposition of severe penalties for those that provide alcohol to minors especially within this age group. Last fall, Representative Ted Pitts (R-Lexington) and I initiated a series of meetings to better understand and discuss what could be done to seriously address the problems with
