This has became “normal” within our society, and this calls for a change. Womanin professional sports are paid substantially less money than men in professional sports. Imaginegrowing up as a young girl, looking at your hero, and knowing that society doesn’t see them atthe same worth as a man doing the same job. The gender wage gap within the U.S. affectseveryone. This calls for a change, and it starts with you. Without steps to change this within oursociety is extremely likely to have greater effects on our country’s future. Let the future changebecause of something you did.The gender wage gap is seen everywhere within our society. This doesn’t just affectwoman, it effects the entire country. Whether you are male or female, an athlete, doctor, orteacher. It affects the entire society.According to Blau and Kahn, social influences play a largerole within the change regarding fixing the gender wage gap. Emphasize is extremely importantwhen regarding how gender differences is creating a toll on wage distribution. This is more thana cognitive, non-cognitive, living cost, and quantitative importance (26-28). It’s important tounderstand that the wage gap is affecting everyones wage distribution, not just woman. It allowsthere to be a huge fluctuation within the system and working class that creates a disadvantage toeveryone. This also affects our middle, low, and high class within society. Paying a woman lessthan a man for doing the same job is biased. If you are expecting the same amount of work to becompleted at the same quality, then gender should not be a cause for concern.
Dessa CooperJune 01, 2022ENGL102Page 3To set a high example of the gender wage gap, take a look at professional sports. Our pro-athletes are held on a higher podium than the rest of our society. So why is it that the genderwage gap is seen even here? According to Cepeda, one way to see the drastic difference in wagesis by looking at the inferiority of the prizes received at the Rome 2018 tennis tournament. Theprize fund that a womencould obtain wasaround 500 million dollars in ten years. However, when looking at what a man could obtain through the prize fund you would see that they were toexpect to receive more than $1,200 million dollars. More specifically, at the tournament of Rome2018, the prize money for the women's champion was 42% less than the male champion's prizefund. This is just the beginning of the many examples found within the U.S. professional sportsindustry. Professional sports is a great start to changing the gender wage gap within our society.
