Schroeder 1 Spencer Schroeder Zoe Albright English 267 29 Jan 2008 Black Elk Speaks – Chapters 1-10 Reading Log Getting started with this story, I was a bit uneasy on how to react. I didn’t know much about Indian culture, or much of anything about Indians, and didn’t know what I was getting into. To be frank, I thought it to be another reading assignment that I would just put off, but in the end, really got in tune with it and have started to like it thus far. The book, to me, seemed really slow going at first. I didn’t have the drive or determination to actually sit down and read for a couple hours on end, which probably explains why it was so hard to get into. After reading the first couple of chapters, I began to realize that I was learning more than the history of surrounding Indian Tribes; I was learning their history, their way of life, and more than I would have even imagined to begin knowing. I was surprised at how little I knew and also how much I picked up simply by reading one-hundred pages. My thoughts through the first couple of chapters were rough; “How am I
