1. Compare and contrast the two types of work groups. Formal groups are defined by
organizational goals with designated work, while informal groups are more natural without a
need for organization goals.
2. Describe in your own words the main argument of Social Identity Theory. What does it
explain, and what are the two types of identification? People associate with a group
mentally just by being a part of it. Collective identification is identification with the group
itself, while relational identification are the connections made between the members of the
group themselves.
3. Social Identity Theory is positively related to what behavioral outcomes? Job satisfaction,
engagement in organizational behaviors, defensive behaviors, schadenfreude.
4. How should organizations decide whether work should be assigned to a group or an
individual? Check to see if the work requires interdependence or requires more than the
aggregate.
