Drug Abuse and Mental Health “Links Between Addiction and Mental Illness: Myths vs. Facts” This article talks about how people that we come in everyday contact with can be an addict to one or many drugs that are in many forms such as liquid, powder and so on. These people can be anyone from co-workers, friends, family, an acquaintance and so on. They go on to talk about if and how mental illnesses and drug abuse are directly linked, and how. U.S. News states: “According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, the two aren't mutually exclusive ; illness does not always trigger drug or alcohol abuse, though there are inherent links between drug use, addiction and mental illness. In fact, multiple studies show that those with mental illness are roughly twice as likely to develop a substance abuse problem.” While there is not direct link, there is evidence that there is a relationship between the two. While not all people with mental illness are addicts or drug users, it is often that those who are mentally ill, use substances as a ‘crutch’, which in turn leads to drug abuse and addiction. Many surveys have actually found direct links to mental illness and drug abuse. The most common respondents are young, white males. However,
