Lecture 3 Notes Test 1 The “Others” in Colonial America 1) Old World Prejudices and Beliefs 2) Women a) The Great Chain of Being i) The social differences between men and women was religion ii) God created a perfect universe and a perfect hierarchy. iii) Believed that God created this world in hierarchy. God is everything. God is male. He is the creator force. Jesus is second. Angels are third. Man is the hierarchy of earth. Old Testament said that God placed man above animals. God is the leader on earth. Women come from Adam’s rib. Women have to be below men. Women are created by men. They are inferior to men. b) Original sin i) Eve had to eat the apple from the tree. ii) God created the Garden of Eden (paradise). iii) You view women as evil people. They will tempt you; they will lead you away from God. If you live in a Puritan society, you will not trust women because they will try and tempt you. You need men in the Puritan society so they can control their women. Women have to be watched out for all of the time. c) Biological differences between men and women i) Man is biologically perfect ii) Women somehow get biologically screwed up and the penis goes up and it becomes a vagina. The perfect being is MAN. And when it gets screwed up, it becomes a WOMAN. iii) Women become subordinate. They naturally become the nurturers. Didn’t get the right to vote until 1920. iv) Anne Hutchinson (1) Her early life (a) Born in England around 1590. Father was a deacon in the church. He was a Protestant. Her father educated her to read so she could read the Bible. She marries a minister in the Church. She has a lot of influential friends in the church who immigrates to Massachusetts. She believes in creating this Puritan society. (2) Role of Women in Puritan Society (a) They are the nurturers. They are inferior to men. (3) Her home Bible Study Group (a) She started holding Bible Study Groups at her house after sermons. The women would come to her house and they would debate about what was spoken in the sermon. Later on, men started coming to her Bible Study Groups. 80 people started coming to her Bible Study Groups. She became the leader of society. (4) Her offenses against the Church and Community
