In the state of Virginia has a multitude of disaster lists. The one that I am most knowledgeable
about is the last snowstorm that we had in January 3 rd , 2022. This storm blew through and decimated
the area. The Northern Virginia area was left without power for more than a week and there were
people that were stranded on the interstate for two days’ time.
In the past few years, we haven’t had too much snow until this year. This year it dumped 3 foot
of snow in just a few hours. Snow that was heavy and wet weighed down power lines and snowed
people into homes. Trees had fallen on roads blocking people on roads in cars as well as in homes where
people had run out of food within the week.
Presidential Disaster Declarations are issued for county (including towns) or independent city
jurisdictions when an event has been determined to be beyond the capabilities of State and local
governments to respond. There have been a total of 62 declared disasters in Virginia. A winter storm can
range from a moderate snow over a period of a few hours to blizzard conditions with blinding wind-
driven snow that lasts for several days. Some winter storms impact multi-State regions. Winter storms
may be accompanied by low temperatures, ice, and heavy and/or blowing snow, which can severely
impair visibility. ( NORTHERN VIRGINIA HAZARD MITIGATION PLAN , 2017).
In the area that I live in we have shelters that are available for the public to use when a disaster
strikes. There is a message that is put out to the residents in the area that say stay home in inclement
weather as well as sheltering in place and what to do in those instances. in the instances that you are
unable to shelter at home you are then able to get to the shelter that is available and shelter there with
others in the community.
