Bobby Bardin II 12/4/07 Chemistry experiment 11 Polymers Prelab: Polyethylene: addition reaction. Kevlar: addition reaction. Polyethylene terephthalate: condensation reaction with water as a side product. Polystyrene: addition reaction Polypropylene: addition reaction Purpose: The purpose of this lab was to learn how polymers are arranged and experiment with the differed processes by which they can be made. Three different polymers were synthesized and their properties studied. The three polymers were Polymethylmethacrylate, Nylon 6-10, and Polyvinylalcohol (slime). The densities of different polymers were also compared. Procedure: Please refer to the hand out for Chem 2 Exp #11 Polymers. Data and observations: Part 1) synthesis of PMMA formed a white crystalline substance, had no side product, and a clear solution became a clear glass-like solution. After heating it became solid and looked like glass. It was very hard. There was no side product. In the density test PMMA sunk in 10% NaCl, H
