Global warming has without a doubt become a hot topic over the last decade or so. Strangely enough, despite all the media hype, there is still no definitive answer to what causes global warming. Some scientists seem to believe that the sky is falling while others remain skeptical and call global warming a hoax. However, general consensus is that Earth is experiencing a worldwide warming trend and the argument has evolved into whether or not humans are the direct cause of the warming trend or if it is a natural occurrence. Here are some facts. “Average temperatures have climbed 1.4 degrees Fahrenheit around the world since 1880, much of this in recent decades.” Also, “average temperatures in Alaska, western Canada, and eastern Russia have risen at twice the global average.” One of the most telling changes in global climate comes from the world’s glaciers and Montana’s Glacier National park which “now only has 27 glaciers, versus 150 in 1910” (National Geographic). The effects of global warming range from minute to severe, but the question is, are human causing it? The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change or the ‘IPCC’ says that the warming temperatures, rising seas, and more intense storms among other environmental problems are “Very likely caused by humans” (Roach). The IPCC’s report concludes that the rise in global average temperature is due to “the observed increase in anthropogenic (human caused) greenhouse gas concentrations” (Roach). Most notable of the greenhouse gases are methane, nitrous oxide, and carbon dioxide. The IPCC argues that all these gases “help trap heat near the earth’s
