James Rachels’ “Active and Passive Euthanasia” In medicine today, it’s permissible to let die rather than kill. Considers throat  cancer case where withholding treatment may prolong one’s death, rather than  end it shortly to avoid pain. Infection and dehydration can take several days.  Considers case of infant where parents deny surgical intervention.
