The work put out forone's own advantage is immediately rewarded, which is a terrific strategy. The research, for instance, demonstrates how smokers who got incentives and gave up smoking had better outcomes than smokerswho received no incentives. However, I believe that present bias and hyperbolic discounting, which referto the propensity to prefer immediate rewards even when those rewards are smaller than longer-termrewards that are bigger or better, are the incentives that have the most benefit and the best chance ofpositively impacting behaviors. For example, smokers may declare they will stop smoking but continue toput it off because they are concerned with the present expense rather than the long-term reward ofstopping today. Even while postponement is a key contributor to harmful habits, it may be moved in theother direction by establishing successful incentive-based programs that deliver instant benefits.
