Eric Staub Dr. Plymire Sport Publications 25 October 2007 Extra Credit Essay #4 The issue of race in sports and the media is still very prevalent in American society. Even though race is a very sensitizing subject, many people still voice their opinions and ideas regarding the matter. In particular race in America is fundamentally a socially and culturally ascribed status, not a biogenetically determined reality . There are many racial issues, ranging from whether or not black athletes are ‘naturally’ gifted, to whether the media exploits race in the media. This aspect of race and sports is talked about in the media on a regular basis. The more blacks achieve in sport, the more whites devise genetic explanations for their achievements, such as proof that blacks have animal characteristics and are thus socially inferior. African American's face disillusion of their dreams and talent because of the prejudices they face. Ultimately, to a significant degree, these racial stereotypes still exist within athletes and sports today. A racist stereotype is the assertion of average difference; it’s the claim that the typical white is superior to the typical black. It allows a white man to
