Hypothesis If the pH of a solution holding chlorella is more acidic, then the chlorella biomass will yield a greater amount of primary production because acidic solutions contain more nutrients which would improve growth and rate of photosynthesis. IV. Background Chlorella pyrenoidosa is a freshwater, single-celled algae. It was the first form of plant with a well-developed nucleus and contains the highest known chlorophyll amount of any plant. Chlorella is mainly used for medicinal purposes because it helps boost the immune system. Its abundance of chlorophyll has been used to help protect against UV radiation and it is extremely rich in amino acids and protein.
