Psych Recitation Notes 01/04/2008 18:05:00 Panic Disorder Sudden short lived episodes of extreme anxiety often accompanied by chest  pain, shortness of breath and dizziness o These episodes are called panic attacks Can be misperceived as heart attacks, asthma attacks, or other serious  psychical problems Can lead to agoraphobia (fear of situations of places where escape might be  difficult in the case of a panic attack) Phobias Excessive or inappropriate fear of a SPECIFIC object or situation  (generalized anxiety is not specific) Mood Disorders Psychological disorders marked by two extremes Two major ones are  o Major Depressive Disorder o Bipolar Disorder Major Depressive Disorder Major reason people go to therapy “Common-cold” of psychology – leading cause of disability world-wide Feelings of worthlessness, no energy, diminished interest in all pleasures and
