Malia Clark IB Lang/Lit John Elsener 3/4/16 WT1: Gatsby Creative Writing Rationale: My Written Task 1 for Part II of the IB English Language and Literature course is a screenplay script set within chapter 5 of The Great Gatsby, a novel written in 1925 by F. Scott Fitzgerald. In chapter 5, narrator Nick Carraway helps Jay Gatsby reconnect with the latter’s love, Daisy Buchanan after many years apart. Their initial encounter is very awkward, but after Nick returns from a thirty minute walk, he comes back to the two laughing and talking together as if they never parted. The screenplay I created for the task shows what happened between Daisy and Gatsby during those thirty minutes. In creating this missing scene between Daisy and Gatsby, I mainly focused on the actions of the characters in order to capture their personalities, as well as the visuals of the setting. Since I didn’t know a lot about Daisy and Gatsby’s background together to really form an accurate conversation, I had little dialogue, with Gatsby mostly talking about the war, and Daisy displaying awe. In this way, I was able to capture the aspect of Gatsby that wants to so dearly impress Daisy, and Daisy’s sophisticated, wealthy, yet awed attitude. I also expanded on the setting itself to show how the characters reacted to their setting. In this way I attempted to embody Fitzgerald’s diction in order to give voice and background to his wonderful characters.
