Emily Wade PChem Lab 9/8/06 A Thermodynamic Study of a Phase Change Results and Calculations The results of this experiment were calculated from using ethanol and solving a large amount of thermodynamic equations, Microsoft Excel, and Spartan computer program to produce statistical data. In this experiment, ∆ vap H was calculated to be 42780.1 J and ∆ vap S was calculated to be 122.41 J. A linear regression analysis was done to determine the standard error and the error at 95% confidence limit. After plugging in equations into Microsoft Excel it told that the standard error was 0.6971. The upper 95% was 14.6581 and the lower 95% was 14.638. ∆G° was calculated by using the equation of ∆G° = -RTlnk which gave the value of 6.244 kJ/mol. ∆S° was calculated to be 122 J/ kmol. ∆G was calculated by using the equation ∆G = ∆G°+RTlnQ which was 0.0489 kJ/ mol. The equation used for ∆S net was ∆S net = ∆S° net -RlnQ which gave-0.211 J/kmol. S corresponding to the equilibrium vapor pressure was found at 25°C. This is how it was worked: S(g)=S°(g)-PlnC p /C po =282.7J/kmol-8.314J/kmolXln(.082)=303.49J/kmol. The volume was calculated at the gas and liquid phase. The liquid phase was calculated by: V=(46.069g/0.7843g/cm 3 )(1mol/6.023x10 23 )=9.69x10 33 cm 3 /molecule. Gas phase: V/n=RT/P=(0.0821)(298K)/(0.08097atm)=303.044 mol
