For Review Only 2 Abstract 33 WRKY proteins constitute one of the major groups of plant specific transcription factors 34 which regulate the stress-specific genes expression during stresses in plants. Os WRKY71, a 35 WRKY protein from rice, is previously characterized for its role in biotic stresses. In present 36 study, Os WRKY71 is assessed for its role in abiotic stresses including salt, cold, heat, drought 37 and wounding. The RT-qPCR analysis revealed the up-regulation of OsWRKY71 gene upon 38 interaction to cold, salt, drought and wounding stresses with maximum up-regulation against 39 salinity while no significant change was observed in response to heat. Over-expression of 40 OsWRKY71 DNA binding domain containing region in E. coli improved the bacterial growth in 41 response to NaCl, mannitol and heat treatments, demonstrating that it encourages the E. coli 42 growth under salt, drought, and heat stresses. The improvement in bacterial growth may be the 43 consequence of Os WRKY71 interaction with the promoter region of the stress related genes in 44 bacteria or with some other proteins as WRKY proteins interact with a broad range of proteins 45 responsible for chromatin remodeling, transcription and signaling.
