American History in VideoThe name Benedict Arnold did not always make people think of treason, at one time it was a name of honor. America would not be what we think of as America without Benedict Arnold. During his childhood, his mother made sure that Arnold was educated and prepared in a trade. Arnold was a natural leader and businessman. Fueled by his father’s disgrace, caused mainly by his mother’s death, Arnold moved to New Haven and opened a shop. This helped Arnold succeeduntil the tax problems hit the colonies from the British. He returned to trading and was very ambitious and he became quite wealthy. He married Margaret Mansfield and they had three children but she later died while Arnold was in war. In 1775, Arnold became the captain of the New Haven militia. April of 1775, the shots at Concord and Lexington were fired and Benedict Arnold was ready to act. He took his men and went to the powder keg for muskets and ammunition. The men there refused to give it to him because they did not have orders but Arnoldwould not take no for an answer because their fellow friends and neighbors were being attacked. Lexington was full of thousands of men who had come to help and Arnold took charge. The Massachusetts authorities appointed him the authority to take the troops to Fort Ticonderoga to take the cannon. He was very successful and they captured the fort. Arnold recognized that the British there did not know that a war had begun and so he contacted Washington. Arnold led a group of 1,000 men through Maine into Quebec where he joined Montgomery.
