Coupled-Cavity Resonator 1 A particular laser is to be designed consisting of two semiconductor resonant cav- ities that are close together and are aligned so as to be strongly coupled. The frequency spacing between adjacent longitudinal modes for each individual cavity is given by Δ f = c 2 nL where c is the freespace speed of light, n is the refractive index of the cavity, and L is the length of the cavity. The combination of the two resonant cavities together produces a overall resonance only at frequencies (wavelengths) where both cavities are resonant. The designed structure is to produce a laser that exhibits one and only one longitudinal mode within the gain bandwidth. The semiconductor laser is to operate at a freespace wavelength of 1310 nm ± 3 nm . The index of refraction of the two resonant cavities in this wavelength range is 3 . 3445. The gain bandwidth of the laser is Δ λ gbw =6 . 0 nm . The Frst resonant cavity has a length of 140 μm . The second resonant cavity is to be longer than the Frst cavity.
