Wanted the finer things in life but could not get those becausehe was a middle class. Thinks he can make a mark on the world because he ismiddle class. Like how people are today. Columbus thought he knew the worldwas smaller than what everyone thought it would be. Nobody had ever gone west.And he wanted to explore. 3 massive kingdoms were taken under control of. Gotrid of the Muslims and the dark skins. Spent years to get the audience withIsabella. His idea was ships and a crew and he could make it west in 6 weeks.Used the triangular sail that could bend with the wind. Revolutionized nauticaltraveling. Traveling “The Unknown” bringing back African slaves. Portugal tookslaves from Africa to Portugal and Spain. Brought back people and products fromthe new world to Isabella and he gained his title. Columbus gets funded 4voyages. They called themselves the conquistadors.
Lecture 2: The Invasion of AmericaI.Spanish Conquest of “Nuevo Mundo” [New World]a.Conquistadors:Columbus and his Spanish monarch who traveled the new world. Columbus showedthese people the path. Were sent there to extract the riches, and figure out what todo with the Native Americans. Once that is accomplished, all the rest will comeand they will settle and become colonies. The people need to be subjected orexterminated.b.“Columbian Exchange”: All the foods. Tomatoes, potatoes, pineapple, tbaco, bananas,pepers, turnkey, grains, fruits. This was all due to Columbus’ discovery. Not from theoriginal voyage, but the voyages taken place after.c.Silver and Gold:Found silver that changed the worlds currency and wealth. Billions of dollars worth of it. Promptthem to make even further war on the people. The people from the new world would haveto mine their own silver so Spanish could get their personal wealth. Brought back armorand weapons. Spain found lots of silver.-Reaching a point where the amount of civilizations is overpowering what the economycan provide for them. Get criminals, religious minorities, and the poor, out of thecountry, send them someplace else. Colonists were exploited.
