Unformatted text preview: Distortion Due to Hemispherical Solid Immersion Lens A hemispherical solid immersion lens is shown in the figure below. The refrac- tive index of the lens is n 1 . The refractive index of the surrounding medium is n 2 . The radius of curvature of the lens is R . A square outline object is placed on the planar surface of the lens (transverse to the axis of the lens – the horizontal dashed line in the figure). The center of the square outline lies on the axis of the lens. The center point is designated as the origin ( x = 0, y = 0, z = 0). Five equally spaced points from the middle of the side of the square (A) to the corner of the square (E) are marked on the square as shown in the figure below. For a particular hemispherical solid immersion lens, the refractive index of the lens is n 1 = 2 . 25. It has a radius of curvature of R = 1 . 00 mm . It is surrounded by air and so n 2 = 1 . 00. The square to be imaged has a side of length 600 μm . The square outline object to be imaged is shown in the previous figure.
