Unformatted text preview: Electronic Image Sensor Format - Digital Camera Image sensing systems such as film cameras, digital cameras, CCDs, CMOS ar- rays, TV cameras, and movie cameras each have a specified image aspect ratio, AR . The image aspect ratio is AR = L Wim /L Him and is expressed as a ratio of integers. The quantities L Wim and L Him are shown in the figure below. For 35 mm film, the width of the film is 35 mm . However, for 35 mm film, the image format is L Wim = 36 mm and L Him = 24 mm . For the Canon model S550 digital camera, one of five image “resolutions” can be selected. These “resolutions” represent the number of recording pixels used to form the image. Each pixel is square with a side dimension of L pixel . The resolution options for the number of recording pixels are as follows: Resolution Pixels Name H × V Large 3 , 072 × 2 , 304 Medium 1 2 , 592 × 1 , 944 Medium 2 2 , 048 × 1 , 536 Medium 3 1 , 600 × 1 , 200 Small 640 × 480 For electronic sensors, the size of the image sensor element is designated historically ac-...
