(i) (10 pts) Calculate the heat loss from a person, standing inside a room, by convection and radiation, under the following conditions. The total exposed surface area is 1.6 m 2 with a surface temperature of 29 ° C and emissivity of 0.95. The air temperature is 20 ° C with a natural convection coefficient of 6.0 W/m 2 K. The temperature of the walls is also 20 ° C. Can you determine which one is the dominant mode of heat transfer? (ii) (10 pts) A rod with a length of 1 foot and a diameter of 0.5 inch is made of pure nickel. At steady state, one end is maintained at 325 K and the other at 275 K. Find the thermal conductivity of the rod. What is the thermal resistance of the rod? What is the heat transfer rate along the rod? [Neglect convection and radiation.]
