GRAN TORINO ANALYSIS 2 Gran Torino Summary Gran Torino is the narrative of Mr. Walter Kowalski, a Korean war veteran and retired Ford factory worker living in a neighborhood of Detroit. Mr. Kowalski has recently lost his wife of many years. He has two sons, grandkids and his faithful friend Daisy (his dog). Mr. Kowalski is a rude old man who surrenders his prejudice and intolerance on anybody willing not to listen. Mr. Kowalski spend his days fixing things around his house, drinking beer and complaining to his dog about how the neighborhoods has been taking over by immigrants. After the death of his wife, Mr. Kowalski is being harass by Father Janovich, which had promised Mr. Kowalski wife that he will get Mr. Kowalski to confession. This two characters begin an ongoing relationship where Mr. Kowalski with his unique character try to make Father Janovich understand that his has no interest in Church and how the Father has not clue of what his talking about in regards with life and death. The movie plot is driven by the neighborhood conflicts generated by the Hmong, Hispanic, and Black gangs. The Lor family next door tries to keep their own teenagers, Sue and Thao Vang Lor, free of the gangs, especially their no-good cousins that won’t leave them alone. The gang keeps bullying these two good kids to join their delinquent activities. Mr. Kowalski tries to stay out of it. His only involvement is to try to keep their noisy rowdiness from spilling over onto his property. Thao initiation is to steal Mr. Kowalski most valued possession is 1972 Gran Torino. Thao is caught by Mr. Kowalski and this is the beginning of an interesting story, where it leads Mr. Kowalski to serve a role model and mentor to Thao. After Thao failure attempt to steal Mr. Kowalski vehicle, his cousin (Spider) confront Thao as Spider and his gang member attack Thao, Mr. Kowalski stepped in and save the kid by pulling his rifle on them.
