Pre-Lab Intro The qualitative analysis of aldehydes and ketones is performed in this lab. The qualitative analysis of organic compounds is used to indentify unknown samples. It is very important in organic chemistry. Especially, we will identify three unknown samples of aldehydes and ketones by using standard tests and derivatization reactions. Tollens’ Tests The Tollens’s test is used for aldehydes. Aldehydes are very easily oxidized to the corresponding carboxylic acid, in this case using a silver salt. Ag + will be reduced to metallic Ag, resulting in a silver mirror in the test tube. The test are acetone(negative) and benzaldehyd (positive). Schiff’s Test The test is used to distinguish aldehydes from ketones. Shciff’s reagent is a solution of the red dye Basic Fuchsin. If there is an aldehyde, the color is changed from colorless to mangenta.
