Rachael Mayer WS 401.01 February 5, 2008 Writing Assignment #1 In her essay White Privilege and Male Privilege, Peggy McIntosh explores the similarities between someone being privileged because of his/her skin color and being privileged because of his/her sex. McIntosh points out that, in basically the same way that white people in today’s society have an advantage over other races; men in today’s society have an advantage over women. She also brings up the argument that we as a country are taught from a young age to ignore these types of discrimination “…so as to maintain the myth…that democratic choice is equally available to all” (98). McIntosh believes that white privilege and male privilege are interrelated, and that both types of privileges are unearned and unjustified. McIntosh describes white privilege as being “…like an invisible weightless knapsack of special provisions, assurances, tools, maps, guides, code-books, passports, visas, clothes, compass, emergency gear, and blank checks” (91).
