Surface and upper level winds are reported in  knots . 1 knot = 1.15 mph =  0.51 meters/sec. ASOS Stations Measure : cloud height/amount, visibility, precipitation  type/intensity/accumulation, obstructions to vision (fog/haze), sea-level  pressure, altimeter setting, temperature, dewpoint temperature, and wind  direction/speed/character (gusts/squalls). rawinsonde  is a balloon-borne instrumentation system that measures  pressure, temperature, dewpoint temperature, wind direction, and wind  speed at altitudes between the surface and the lower stratosphere. Doppler Radar  can detect the following about precipitation: 1. Intensity 2. Location (3-D) 3. Movement 4. Winds/Rotation wind profiler  is a Doppler radar that operates in clear as well as cloudy  air. The radar measures winds at altitudes above the radar site by  determining the scattering of radar energy by turbulent air moving with the  wind. geostationary orbit  is an orbit 35,800km above the Earth’s surface in  which a satellite remains over a fixed point on the Earth’s equator. Different types of  satellite imagery : 1. Visible     : measures reflected solar radiation (what you see with your  eyes). Bright spots are thick clouds or snow, dark spots are oceans,  forests, unfrozen rivers in winter. 2.
