November 02, 2007 Motivation. o Definition. Energizes behavior and gives it direction. Hypothalamus. Motivation center, responsible for natural instincts such as hunger, sex, rage. o Hunger. Basic Motivation. Directed toward helping to maintain our internal balance. o Homeostasis. Neurophysiology. Stimulation of lateral (side) hypothalamus, animal starts eating. Stimulation of the ventromedial (lower middle) hypothalamus, animal stops eating. o Obesity. Defined as 30% above normal body weight. 25% of Americans are obese. More women than men. More in the lower classes than the higher classes. Genetic contribution. If both parents are obese, 70% risk for children. If one parent is obese, 40% risk for children. If neither parent is obese, 10% risk for children. Set Point Theory. Body weight is set at birth and body tries to maintain this set body weight. o
